Census Helpers Wanted For Count
January 12, 2001 9:47: BROMLEY needs 330 people to help with the vast task of delivering and collecting census forms on April 29.
They will join a force of 69,000 census takers who will pound the countrys streets, counting the population.
The Office for National Statistics is now recruiting volunteers for the largest peace time job ever. The census is carried out every 10 years.
Around 51 census team leaders will oversee the work of 528 census counters. Each counter will deliver forms to between 400 and 500 homes.
Local census area manager Mike Simpson said: "I expect my staff to count around 300,000 people in the borough, which will be quite a challenge.
"Their work will help plan essential services such as health, education and social services for the next 10 years."
He added: "These jobs give people the opportunity to earn a bit of extra money and do something for the community.
"We want people from every walk of life and background."
Application forms are available from local job centres or by contacting the census recruitment team on 0845 306 2001.
Applicants must be over 18.
